Pulverized dust. Bad quality.I've never seen gyokuro this bad, it was full of dust, were they trying to make matcha? I sifted it and 27grams went through fine mesh AKA dust. 14 grams was very small pieces, the remaining 47 grams was still in much smaller pieces than it should be but It's harder to screen and the point was already made. This is simply unacceptable. If you haven't had quality gyokuro, it should be long slender pieces, not ground up bits. I usually order straight from japan but thought I would take a chance for the quick delivery. The flavor is also sub par but that's subjective.1Gratifying! and the price tag is very affordable. This is some of the finest tea I have tried and I love it!I struggled between buying from this brand v.s.buying from another trustworthy tea company that I have been its long term customer. I personally like the taste of the Gyokuro, from the same grade, offer by another company but the Tealyra's is about 1/3 cheaper in price than the other brand I like. I figured the money I could save by sticking with Tealyra is more than the quality I forgo, so I have been sticking with Tealyra for my Gyokuro since my first purchase.Yame is a region in Japan where the gyokuro is well famous for so you can't go wrong buying from Tealyra. The package comes with clear instruction on brewing time/method. I'd strongly suggest follow the instruction the first time then adjust the amount of tea leaves to suit one's taste. Just remember, using the correct timing to brew gyokuro is extremely important. NEVER brew the tea for over 2 mins for the first steep. The second steep could be slightly longer, about 30 secs more, to retain the strong flavor. When I tried it the first time few years ago, I didn't like gyokuro that much as I thought it tasted too "grassy" to my liking. I then adjusted the brewing time and temperature and I realized the water temperature I used was a little too warm. This tea is delicate and so fine that slightly cooler than hot water is the ideal temperature to use. A two minutes steeping is more than enough. There is a subtle "smokey" taste to the freshness of the nice Japanese green tea. The combination is simply unique and gratifying. Granted, the tea is more on the expansive side and I don't consume it every day. But for $28, I'd say this is totally a bang for your buck splurging on some of the finest green tea on the market. I am so spoiled drinking the gyokuro that I hardly want to switch back to regular green tea these days. Be warned :)4Good flavor but tiny pieces - most came out of my steeper ballthis tea has a very nice, mild flavor. unfortunately, most of the tea ended up in the bottom of my mug because it seeped out of my mesh steeper ball. for the price of this tea, I would have expected it be to be larger, whole pieces instead of tiny flakes. kind of looks like freshly mowed grass in the bag. pictures show how it looks in the bag, on the spoon, and the remnants on the spoon after scooping. most of the bag is made up of the tiny flakes left on the spoon. kind of disappointed and most likely won't order again despite the tastiness.3Good taste, but quite 'dusty'When I opened the bag, I expected to see something at least similar to the image on the page. Instead, I found something consisting more of tiny pieces of leaves and 'dust' than whole leaves. On trying to brew a cup, using the finest mesh tea ball I had, a large amount of the smaller pieces and 'dust' got through the tea ball. You can see the result in the photos. (I brewed using one slightly heaping teaspoon of tea and 145 degree F. filtered water for 1 minute 45 seconds.) It tasted great, but for the price, I'd not expect more than half the tea to be broken pieces and 'dust'. I already ordered paper tea bags to deal with this, but was quite disappointed. You can see for yourself the consistency of the tea I received today in the photos. I put one heaping teaspoon on white paper from a bag I'd just opened and then slightly spread it.Edit:I just purchased a few quite different types of tea directly through Tealyra - an Assam, Yunnan Golden Monkey black, and a Moonlight 'white pu-erh' of all things, (actually very good), and noticed the packaging was different, must be new, and the teas all seem very high quality, with whole leaves. I'll have to order a gyokuro directly from them as well to see if it too is of similar, much higher quality.3Was great, but now questionable - UPDATE back to GreatUpdate 2016-4-21 - after sitting with several Gyokuros, senchas and a matcha/sencha mix for a few months. This one is may favorite. A Rishi sencha is a close second, and the Rishi matcha/sencha mix is great when I need a lift. This one has the best grass/hay scent and flavor. It still has a lot a particles but I don't mind that any more. Its good for three steeps. I will buy it again. Just make sure your water is 165-175 F and steep for 1.5 to 2 minutes. It seems the descriptions and source have changed. This may or may not be due to some funny business, but I have bought this tea three times. It has always been listed as organic, but now I find no mention of organic. And, the quality has degraded. The first order was great. The last one has a lot of powder. I do not trust the source any longer. So, I will look for another organic Gyokuro. That said, the flavor is still pretty good. Trust is hard to come by with so many online choices. For as much as I drink, I am going to spend a little more from a more trusted source.Update - 2016-3-21 - Tried a similar tea for Rishi. This one is much better. Still not sure if it is still organic , but it is certainly very good, particularly for the price.5umami yum!I've bought gyokuro from a few direct Japanese sources and always have had great results. The drawback for westerners is the cost of and length of time in shipping. I ran out of my standard tea recently and decided to buy this tea as I knew I could have it the next day. It was really outstanding. A very dark green brew with complex and earthy flavors - the umami character really comes out.The only reason I didn't give it a 5 (for me a 5 is perfect in every way) was because there was a lot of powder in the package. Maybe when the tea is bought in bulk and repackaged and handled it gets crushed, I don't know. I don't really mind a lot of sediment material in my teacup but I know some do. Nevertheless it is delicious.4Ohh so yummyI always preferred a more stronger tasting green tea (not weak) but disliked the bitterness that comes with steeping it too long with most sencha brands I have tried. This is my first Gyokuro, and I think this has ruined Sencha for me now. After drinking this tea, I have a hard time going back to my old premium grade Senchas. This is a little more expensive than the Senchas I used to buy from my local farmers market, but the taste makes it worth it in my opinion. I can not compare to other Gyokuros since this is the only one I have tried, but it tastes incredibly smooth, full bodied green tea flavor, with 0 bitterness, and a slight sweetness. The sweetness is a little more pronounced than with Senchas, which I like. The color is a deep emerald green. These seem very fresh when you open the bag. The leaves are a nice fresh green color, not stale looking like with some cheaper teas, and has a nice earthy grassy fragrance to it. Only thing I would note, is I find the recommended 2-3 minute steep time far too long for my tastes, It makes it too strong for me. I steep it about 1 minute for the first steep, and maybe 1.5 minutes for the second or third steep at 180 degrees water temp. I find the first and second steep tastes identical. the third steep starts to taste a little bit weaker, but is still very drinkable. I usually will steep 3 times before replacing to get the most out of this more expensive tea.As with all green teas, water temp and steep time is imperative. green tea should never be bitter if brewed right. The flavor is what is effected by the quality of the tea, not so much how bitter it is. If you taste bitterness, adjust how you are brewing it. reduce temp, or time, or both.I hope my review has been helpful to you. It encourages me to continue writing and updating my reviews. Please leave a comment if you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer if I can be of help.5Real Gyokuro, real green tea taste. As a Chinese, I drink green tea every day, there are different types of green tea, Gyokuro'' is my favitate. This Japanese tea is not like regular green tea with bitter taste, it with a bit of sweet and flavor. The reason is about 3 week ago before the tea leaves been cut off, tea farmer will use some material like a cover in front of whole tea trees to block the sunshine onto tea leaves, the tea is lack of sunshine burn that the tannin in tea leaves is less, that's why the unique flavor come out. I'm happy that there are so many people in US also like Gyokuro, I cannot live without tea that in my 4 weeks trip in Michigan is really a challenge for me to find a real green tea here. Thanks for Amazon for me to get this, it's really same taste like what I drink every day in Japan and China.I read some review to talk about price, I should say, this is NOT expensive, it's really a regular normal price if compare with the price in Japan. Gyokuro is premium green tea, much expensive than Sencha. Green tea is never cheap even in China and Japan. If any green tea is lower than 20 dollar per 100g, it will never be a good one. A medium level green tea in China will be at least 15 dollar per 50g. Gyokuro is almost same, high level Gyokuro is very expensive. It spend me at least 50 dollars on green tea leaves per month, like you have coffee : )Another thing regarding to Gyokuro and Sencha. I won't talk about Chinese tea here lol. if makes Sencha, the hot water can be around 70 or 80 degree, but for Gyokuro, which should be made more gentle, please use cooler hot water, no more than 60c, otherwise the taste will change, the sweetie will gone. Also Gyokuro can be made by water even with ice, just put the leaves into water and wait for 6 hours or more, it's possible to enjoy the cold tea, we call it Mitzu dashi '''. Please enjoy it. This is really good, true Gyokuro taste : )5The flavor is good but I have to dock 2 stars because the ...The flavor is good but I have to dock 2 stars because the leafs look like it's almost in a powder/dust form. It doesn't look like a leaf. This tells me this batch are the leftovers from the processing machine. The ones they sweep off the machines. I guess for the price it's what's expected cause quality gyokuro would cost more.3Is there a quality green tea out there?I'm still irritated with Starbucks for ruining Teavana. I've been searching for the best green tea, and after this one I'm still searching. I also tried the Tealyra - Imperial Jasmine Dragon Pearls - Loose Leaf Green Tea - Jasmine Green Tea and it was just awful and I threw out after about 4 tries. This tea is decent but it isn't as good as Ocha & Co. Organic Japanese Gyokuro Loose Leaf Green Tea 100g 3.5oz.. So far the Ocha is the only one that I"m placing a second order on...but none of these hold a candle to Teavanas Gyokuro green tea for flavor, and maximum steeping ability. Does anyone have a quality green tea that is worth the money and where the flavor can last 3 or more steeps?2
