The leaves are alternate, round-heart-shaped, with large lyre-shaped stipules. The lower leaves are petiolate; the stem leaves are sessile. Flowers are single, large (up to 3.5 cm). The corolla consists of five unequal petals: usually the two upper ones are dark or blue-violet, the two side ones are light purple; the lower petal is larger than the others are.
